Features And Characteristics Of Four-Stroke And Two-Stroke Outboard Engines

The outboard propulsion system is the most common type of propulsion system used by boats and some watercraft can only be propelled using this system. When you are selecting an outboard for your watercraft, two common types of engines are four-stroke and two-stroke engines. However, both types of engines can vary in terms of their characteristics and features.

Several Components All in One

Outboards are highly convenient propulsion devices because they come with transmission, engine, and prop all in one. There are several places where you can attach the outboard such as on the transom.

The four-stroke engine burns clean fuel within cylinders. The oil is circulated in a different system. This allows for the oil and fuel to not be mixed. However, with a two-stroke engine, the oil and fuel are mixed together and burned at the same time. The fuel is fed when the piston is in a specific position to minimize any wasted fuel.

Engine Power

When choosing an outboard, it's important to know how much power you need. This is because some outboard engines are substantially more powerful than others. The amount of power you will need depends on the size of your boat and how fast you want it to travel. In some cases, you might want to have more than one outboard on your boat. You're even able to implement a joystick system so that you can use an outboard to make it easier to dock.

Reliability

The outboard motor must be reliable so that your boat does not break down and become stranded. This is especially true if you will be going on a long journey or if you plan on racing your boat. Having more than one engine is also a way to make sure that you're able to get home if one of your engines fails.

The motor needs to be lightweight. In the past, powerful four-stroke engines were also very heavy. However, newer engines on the market are much lighter. However, you might still want a smaller and lighter engine that doesn't have as much power if you are operating a cruising vessel.

Extra Features

Once you have determined how powerful you want your engine to be, you can decide whether you want any additional features. The type of features found on an outboard motor include:

  • Power thrust
  • Electronic ignition
  • Power tilting

For example, you might need power tilting if you're fishing in a shallow body of water. If you aren't sure which engine is the best for your boat, contact an outboard dealer for help.

About Me
Staying Safe During Sports

When my son started playing competitive sports, I was a little concerned about how he would do. He was smaller than the other kids, and I really didn't want him to get hurt or deal with long-term problems. However, after I made a trip to the sporting goods store, I felt a lot better. They had a huge range of protective equipment, and I was able to outfit him with exactly what he needed.
